Here Is Where The Monsters Are
UCA Canterbury
2022 - 23
The installation presents playful, unsettling painted compositions and three-dimensional hybrid figures exploring social issues based on personal experiences. It tells stories that invite viewers to face their own monsters, the ones we hide and the ones we can't help but reveal.
The installation presents a curious journey in-between monstrous beings that vary in size and position so that we come face to face with some uncomfortable images and attempt not to trip over the vulnerability of others.
Inspired by folklore and the fantastical beings of ancient mythologies, the materials used include calico, soap and silicon in response to the formality of marble, stone and bronze often used in classical statues. The characters in the paintings have an impenetrable gaze, also like those of the statues but also to project the self-obsession that our own monsters require of us.
